Kozhikode to retain traffic curbs after Onam pilot eases congestion

KOZHIKODE: Traffic restrictions introduced in Kozhikode during the Onam season will continue beyond the festival after a pilot project helped ease congestion on the city’s busy roads, police said.

The measures include a crackdown on illegal parking and restrictions on single-occupant cars within city limits, part of an effort to address chronic traffic bottlenecks.

Police introduced the measures at the start of the Onam holidays, identifying designated parking areas across the city and taking action against motorists who parked illegally.

Drone surveillance and the deployment of additional personnel were also used to monitor traffic and enforce the restrictions, helping the city avoid the severe congestion typically associated with the festive rush.

City Police Commissioner A.P. Shoukathali said the measures would remain in place following the success of the pilot project.

Police took action against more than 100 vehicles for illegal parking during the first four days of the operation.

The initiative was overseen by Traffic Assistant Commissioner P.C. Chacko.

Police said cooperation from the public also played a significant role in keeping traffic moving during the busy Onam period and encouraged authorities to continue the measures beyond the festival.
