Kochi Metro could become ‘Keralam Metro’ as KMRL seeks new statewide identity

KOCHI : The organisation behind Kochi Metro could soon carry a new statewide identity, with Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) proposing that it be renamed Keralam Metro Rail Limited.

The proposal has been submitted to the Kerala government for in-principle approval as KMRL takes on a wider role in developing mass transit infrastructure across the state.

KMRL Managing Director Loknath Behera said the existing name no longer fully represents the organisation’s expanding geographical footprint. While the agency was originally established to develop and operate the metro system in Kochi, its responsibilities have gradually extended to other cities and transport projects.

KMRL has been given responsibilities connected with proposed metro projects in Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode, while it is already associated with projects including Kochi Metro and Kochi Water Metro.

The proposed Keralam Metro Rail Limited identity is intended to reflect this transition from a Kochi-focused metro organisation into an agency with a broader role in Kerala’s urban mobility plans.

The move follows similar changes adopted by metro organisations elsewhere in India as their operations expanded beyond individual cities. Nagpur Metro’s organisational structure evolved into Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation, while the agency established for Lucknow Metro became Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation as its mandate widened.

However, the proposed change in Kerala is still at an early stage and Kochi Metro Rail Limited has not yet been officially renamed.

If the state government gives its in-principle approval, the proposal will have to go through further corporate and government procedures, including approvals from KMRL’s board and shareholders and the relevant central authorities.

The proposed restructuring would be limited to the organisation’s name and branding and is not expected to alter its existing contracts, employees, assets, liabilities or legal obligations.

Summary

Kochi Metro Rail Limited is seeking an in-principle nod from the Kerala government to rename itself Keralam Metro Rail Limited, signalling a shift from a Kochi-centric agency to a statewide urban transit developer. Already handling metro and water metro projects in multiple cities, the proposed change is limited to name and branding, with no impact on contracts, staff or liabilities.
