KOCHI : State Bank of India (SBI) has assured customers that their account balances remain safe as it investigates a suspected data leak involving personal information found on the dark web.
In a regulatory filing, the bank said a preliminary examination of approximately 375,000 records available on the dark web had identified 3,897 customer records containing personally identifiable information.
The information reportedly included customers’ names, registered mobile numbers, dates of birth, gender, email addresses and residential addresses. Branch details, Customer Information File (CIF) identifiers, lead IDs and metadata linked to loan and lead records were also reportedly among the exposed data.
In a separate statement on X, SBI said the suspected incident affected a “very very small number of customers” and had no material impact on its IT infrastructure, core business operations, financial performance or business continuity.
“Customer balances are completely safe and we are taking all possible steps to protect the interests of our valued customers,” the bank said in the post, titled “Important Information for Customers”.
SBI reiterated that safeguarding customers’ financial assets, personal data and trust remained its highest priorities.
The bank’s preliminary findings distinguish the 3,897 identified customer records from the wider dataset examined. The information provided did not establish that all 375,000 records belonged to SBI customers.
A suspected data leak involving 3,897 customer records prompts SBI to reassure customers of their financial safety and highlight ongoing protective measures.
