BCCI denies speculation on Shreyas Iyer’s ODI captaincy

The BCCI has denied reports linking Shreyas Iyer to India’s ODI captaincy, with Secretary Devajit Saikia clarifying that no such discussions have taken place.

NEW DELHI : The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has dismissed reports suggesting that middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer is being considered as India’s next ODI captain.

In response to rumours that Iyer could replace Rohit Sharma in 50-over cricket, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia said there have been no such discussions within the board. “That’s news to me. There have been no discussions on Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy,” Saikia clarified in comments to Hindustan Times.

The speculation gained traction after Iyer’s exclusion from India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad, sparking debate about his standing in the team. However, India’s Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar explained that the omission was a result of tough selection calls rather than any long-term leadership decisions. “With regards to Shreyas, it’s not his fault, nor is it ours. It’s just that you can pick only 15 players,” Agarkar said.

The development comes as Rohit Sharma continues to lead India across formats, with the selectors showing no indication of a shift in ODI captaincy.
