Helio Sousa named Kuwait national team coach ahead

The Kuwait Football Association (KFA) has appointed Portuguese tactician Helio Sousa as head coach of the national team on a two-year deal.

KFA President Sheikh Ahmed Al-Youssef Al-Sabah made the official announcement during the draw ceremony of the 64th edition of the Kuwaiti Premier League (Zain League), held earlier today. He stated that Sousa’s appointment followed “lengthy and thorough meetings” to identify the ideal leader for the national team's technical staff in the coming period.

Sousa’s familiarity with Gulf football and proven track record are seen as key assets as Kuwait looks to rebuild its footballing momentum on the regional and international stage.

The announcement coincided with the official draw for the upcoming Zain League season, which kicks off on September 12. Ten clubs will compete in the tournament: Kuwait SC (the defending champions), Al-Qadisiyah, Al-Arabi, Al-Salmiya, Kazma, Al-Fahaheel, Al-Nasr, Al-Tadamon, Al-Jahra, and Al-Shabab.

“Coach Sousa is fully aware of the Kuwaiti national team and its players,” said Al-Sabah. “He brings deep regional experience, having successfully guided Bahrain to the Gulf Cup title in 2019.”
