Zelensky demands security guarantees before any Putin talks, floats Trump mediation

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said he will not meet Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss ending the war unless Kyiv first secures “clear security guarantees.”

KYIV : Zelensky clarified that while he does not rule out direct talks with Putin, such a meeting would only be possible once Ukraine secures firm assurances of protection. He noted that Kyiv is working on a framework for security guarantees within the next 7–10 days, with the aim of holding a trilateral meeting involving Washington. Possible host nations for the talks include Switzerland, Austria, or Türkiye.

The Ukrainian leader categorically rejected any Chinese role in providing security, citing Beijing’s ongoing alignment with Moscow since the outbreak of the conflict.

On the battlefield, Zelensky warned that Russia is reinforcing its presence on the southern Zaporizhia front, where Moscow continues to push annexation claims. He said Ukrainian intelligence has observed Russian troop transfers from Kursk to Zaporizhia in what he described as efforts to consolidate control of the strategic region.

In a significant military announcement, Zelensky revealed the successful testing of Ukraine’s new long-range “Flamingo” cruise missile, capable of striking targets up to 3,000 kilometers away. Mass production could begin as early as February, he added.

The remarks come as the war enters its fourth year with no political settlement in sight.
