MUMBAI : Bollywood actor Imran Khan has been directed to leave India by October 28 after joining a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, according to media reports published on Thursday.

The Indian Express reported that the Foreigners Regional Registration Office had served Khan a notice alleging that his participation violated the Foreigners Act. Khan, the nephew of actor Aamir Khan, is an American citizen and holds an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card.

Khan was briefly detained during the October 10 demonstration at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan. His partner, Lekha Washington, was also present at the protest, which called for Kumar’s resignation.

The action followed complaints by BJP leader Kirit Somaiya, who questioned whether Khan’s involvement breached the conditions governing his stay in India and sought action against him.

Speaking to reporters during the demonstration, Khan said he had attended in a personal capacity as a Mumbai resident and was not representing any political organisation. He questioned restrictions on people’s movement and their ability to express their views.

Mumbai Police said the gathering lacked permission and cited court directions restricting protests to Azad Maidan. Organisers maintained that they had emailed a permission request but received no response.

Imran Khan, nephew of actor Aamir Khan, has been asked to exit India following his involvement in a protest against CEC Gyanesh Kumar. Authorities claim his participation breached the Foreigners Act. Khan, an American citizen with an OCI card, defended his actions as personal, while BJP leaders raised concerns over his stay conditions. The protest lacked official approval.
