PM Modi to open Northeast India's biggest airport terminal in Guwahati

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the new terminal of Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport on December 20.

GUWAHATI : Billed as the largest airport terminal in Northeast India, the new facility is seven times larger than the existing terminal and has already drawn widespread attention for its striking architecture and design. The terminal is aimed at meeting the region’s rapidly growing air traffic and improving connectivity within India and beyond.

Announcing his visit, the Prime Minister said the inauguration would be a major boost to Assam’s infrastructure, adding that increased capacity would enhance ease of living while supporting commerce and tourism.

Once fully operational, the terminal is expected to handle 13.1 million passengers annually by 2032. Officials say it is envisioned as a regional connectivity hub, strengthening links between India and Southeast Asia. The facility will be capable of handling up to 34 air traffic movements per hour, the highest in the Northeast, and will be equipped with one of the most advanced Instrument Landing Systems in the region.

Beyond scale and technology, the terminal’s design has become a major talking point. Its architecture draws deeply from the cultural and natural heritage of Northeast India, with interiors inspired by indigenous orchids, bamboo textures and the landscapes of Assam.

The central theme reflects the flow of the Brahmaputra river and indigenous orchids known locally as Kopu Phool. The terminal houses more than 2,000 plant species, features a dedicated zone inspired by Kaziranga National Park, and includes artefacts representing Majuli Island.

A standout feature is the expansive bamboo vault, giving the terminal a distinctive identity. Designed as a multifunctional cultural space, the vault is intended to promote community engagement and cultural exchange, while highlighting bamboo as a cultural insignia of the Northeast.

Architects have blended traditional Assamese forms with sustainability-focused design, positioning the terminal as a new benchmark for airport architecture in India.

Officials also said the existing terminal building will gradually be repurposed into an integrated cargo terminal. The new terminal places strong emphasis on digital integration, with 14 entry points including four DigiYatra gates.
