India to miss September 21 partial solar eclipse, scientists confirm

Event visible in Australia, New Zealand and Antarctica with up to 85% obscuration.

NEW DELHI : The last solar eclipse of 2025 will occur on September 21, but skywatchers in India will not be able to see it, astronomers said.

The partial solar eclipse will begin at 10:59 p.m. IST, peak at 1:11 a.m. IST on September 22, and end at 3:23 a.m. IST. By that time, the Sun will have already set in India, making the event invisible from the subcontinent.

Observers in parts of the Southern Hemisphere, including Australia, New Zealand and Antarctica, will see the Moon cover up to 85% of the Sun. Scientists said the phenomenon will also be observable across several Pacific islands.

Partial solar eclipses occur when the Moon blocks only a portion of the Sun, creating a dramatic visual effect in areas of visibility.

Although not visible in India, the eclipse will be live-streamed by global observatories, allowing Indian astronomy enthusiasts to follow the event virtually.

The next solar eclipse that can be seen from India is expected on August 2, 2027, when a partial eclipse will be visible in the late afternoon.
