THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : Sales through Kerala’s state-run Supplyco have crossed ₹300 crore during the Onam season, as consumers turned to subsidised essentials and other goods offered through the government’s efforts to curb festive-season price increases.

Total sales reached ₹304.65 crore as of Sunday evening, according to official figures, with Supplyco outlets and special Onam fairs across the state reporting strong demand.

Of the total, subsidised commodities accounted for ₹109.31 crore in sales, while non-subsidised products generated ₹195.34 crore.

The government has made 13 categories of essential commodities available at subsidised prices during the Onam period as part of its market intervention programme.

Officials said Supplyco supermarkets and Onam fairs across several districts have recorded higher customer turnout and turnover compared with previous years.

Demand has been particularly strong for household essentials, including rice and coconut oil, as consumers seek lower-priced alternatives during the festival shopping period.

Supplyco, the Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation, is one of the state government’s main channels for market intervention, selling essential commodities at subsidised rates in an effort to cushion consumers from sharp increases in retail prices.

The ₹300-crore sales milestone comes amid increased consumer spending ahead of Onam, Kerala’s biggest annual festival, when demand for food and household essentials typically rises.
